Travel VPN: preparing for an unfamiliar network

For an unfamiliar network, prepare an updated client, backup connectivity and account recovery in advance. Do not rely on promises of universal access in every country.

Practical checks

Prepare devices before travelling: update the operating system and VPN client, store configurations securely and test account recovery. Check whether VPN use is permitted at your destination and on the network. Changing IP does not change a bank’s, employer’s or subscription service’s terms.

At a hotel or airport, complete sign-in through the official Wi-Fi portal before starting the tunnel. Do not install unknown root certificates or apps from pop-up instructions. Avoid workplace logins on shared devices and do not save passwords there. Prepare backup MFA separately from the main phone.

Test ordinary HTTPS, work apps, DNS and behaviour when connectivity drops. Compare Wi-Fi and mobile data while changing one setting at a time. Resolve payment and fraud-check refusals through official support, without invented addresses or account-sharing intermediaries. After travelling, remove unneeded profiles and revoke access for lost devices.
